In terms of the student population, it is the third biggest university in Wales. It now serves 20,375 undergraduate and postgraduate students with around 330 undergraduate courses and 120 postgraduate programs.
Swansea University’s £20 million International Sports Village is located on the western side of Sketty Lane; five minutes walk from the Singleton Park campus. It has an eight-lane track, a six-lane indoor track and training center, floodlit playing fields for rugby, football, lacrosse, and cricket, two artificial hockey fields, a sports hall, tennis, and squash courts, a climbing wall, and a spin room. The university also has training fields at Fairwood, north of the city, which it co-developed with Swansea City A.F.C.
During the 2012 Summer Olympics, the institution held training camps for the paralympic teams from Mexico and New Zealand and the Ireland triathlon team. It hosted the I.P.C. Athletics European Championships in 2014. Furthermore, in 2015, it held training camps for the Canadian and Fiji national rugby union teams in preparation for the 2015 Rugby World Cup. In the 2015 Guardian Institution Guide, sports science at the university jumped from 40th to 8th place.
Swansea City A.F.C., Ospreys, and Welsh Athletics are affiliated with the department. Wales rugby union player Alun Wyn Jones, Olympic swimmer Georgia Davies, Paralympian swimmer Liz Johnson, and Paralympian boccia player David Smith are all former students. Swansea University is ranked in the top quarter of the British University athletic leagues. It participates in the Welsh Varsity competition, Wales’ premier student sports event, with Cardiff University. This includes the Welsh Boat Race and the highlight rugby union Varsity match in 2015, which drew 16,000 students to Swansea’s Liberty Stadium.
Swansea University is a research-intensive institution with 61 research centers. According to the Research Excellence Framework (2014), Swansea is rated 26th in the United Kingdom for research excellence. It examined the work of roughly 400 employees in 18 topic areas. A third of research is now classified as world-leading, with the remaining 90% classified as globally good across all fields. Swansea University was rated 22nd in the United Kingdom for producing research that directly influences global challenges.
Swansea University collected an additional £2.5 million from other sources for every £1 million provided in the research grant by the Higher Education Funding Council for Wales. It has won the Athena SWAN Bronze medal for its contributions to the advancement of women’s careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, and Medicine.
Swansea scholars working in Computational Fluid Dynamics and Aerodynamic Design are participating in the Bloodhound Supersonic Car land-speed world record attempt, which will take place in October 2016 in Hakskeenpan, South Africa. In addition, the institution was a crucial collaborator in the successful Thrust S.S.C. and-speed record attempt, which now holds the global land-speed record.
Urban Air Mobility (UAM) is a new idea that envisions a sustainable, economic, and accessible air transportation system for emergency management, freight delivery, and passenger mobility inside or across a metropolitan region. However, safety is the most difficult factor hindering UAM development and public acceptability, and no standard UAM safety evaluation approach has been devised so far.
This PhD studentship will try to propose creative ways to address the problem of UAM safety while accounting for intrinsic uncertainties such as urban air turbulence and the non-linear effects of manufacturing defects. The project will build on an existing rotorcraft flight dynamics model (written in C++) and use cutting-edge aerodynamics modeling technologies and the multi-agent modeling technique to increase simulation feasibility, particularly in dangerous conditions. The study will also develop a quantitative safety evaluation technique that uses an advanced inverse simulation algorithm and an uncertainty quantification approach.
The project offers the candidate an exciting chance to create breakthrough technologies, including aerodynamics, flight dynamics, and autonomous systems. It also aids the applicant in establishing collaborative relationships with academia, industry, and airworthiness authorities in order to create unique aviation safety solutions for next-generation VTOL (Vertical-TakeOff-and-Landing) aircraft.
